iOS Setup

It is highly recommended that you update your device to the latest iOS version.

If you want to add your Google account to your iPhone or iPad, you'll want to go to Settings > Mail, Calendar, Contacts. Under the hood, Apple is using the open standard IMAP, CalDAV, and CardDAV services to handle syncing Google services. Unfortunately, Gmail retro-fitted support for IMAP and it can be quirky at times - especially if you like Gmail's labeling system. If you want to use the built-in iOS Mail app and its unified inbox, however, and you don't have a paid account, it's your only option.

1. Launch the
Settings app from your Home screen.

2. Tap Mail, Contacts, Calendars.

3. Tap Add Account

4. Tap Google.

5. Google's authenticator screen will pop open, where you can enter your SFUSD email address ( and password.

6. Tap Allow when prompted with the "iOS would like to..." screen.

  1. 7. Choose which services you'd like to sync: Mail, Contacts, Calendars, or Notes. To receive and respond to meeting requests on your device, both Mail and Calendar need to be turned on, and New events needs to be enabled in your Google Calendar settings.
  2. To enable 'New events', sign in to your Google Calendar using the web browser on your phone or computer. Go to Calendar Settings > Calendars > Click on the Notifications for the calendar you want to sync. Under Email check 'New events' (and any of the other Invitation settings you want enabled e.g. changed events, cancelled events, event responses), and click Save.
  3. 8.Tap Save.
  4. 9. Once you set up your Google account for mail and calendar, please de-activate your Exchange account on your phone. To do this, go back into Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars and select the Exchange account. Toggle the radio buttons from green to grey.
  5. 10. Set Default Contacts and Calendar to Gmail. Go to Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendar.  Scroll down to the Contact and Calendar sections and click on "Default Account" for Contacts and "Default Calendar" for Calendar.

After you save your account, you can access your settings at any time by tapping the Gmail entry under the Accounts header. If you'd like to change the description from "Gmail" to something more apt, tap the Account button, then tap the Description field.
